I have to say, TwoThreeNine.com has especially benefited from our friend Cool Hand Luc’s over the past year and half.

90% of our events took place at the little coffee shop like it was our home away from home. While we exist in Innernet world, Cool’s was the hub of our action. We will really miss you guys, and thank you for existing.

May 12th is the last show at The Hand, so let’s make it real cray cray (but not so much that their landlords will be upset)

The Facebook event page promises:
“MAN ON WIRE (electrocoustic indie pop)
RYUN HORN (a white tracy morgan)
DOUG DAVISON (witty pop satiri-core)
PANZRAM (socially awkward punkers)
AUTARKEIA (emotional, heartwarming heaviness)
GINA HENDERSHOT (bloodthirsty alternacountry)
JAMES DEVERTER (first show! acoustisonical musicings)
BEGOTTEN (first show! post/goth-rock)
LET’S GO EXPLORING! (performing a 3-d holographic set w/ biggie smalls)
Plus:
Freshly smoked food (vegan and non-)! Super special raffle prizes! Movies!”

Smoked food makes me really sentimental, and so do Ryun Horn’s burps

Please excuse me if I cry uncontrollably into your popcorn

The food we serve is acquired from local grocery stores, restaurants, Free Cycle, pantries and food drives and would be thrown away if we were not putting it to good use through our service.

-attending Sunday cooking and/or servings (2nd and 4th Sundays of the month)

-networking with local grocery stores, restaurants, and pantries to grow our intake of food

TwoThreeNine got an exclusive sneak peak inside the life of local DJ artist Jah Pino. Jah leads a busy life juggling the role of event coordinator for Florida Gulf Coast University’s GSA program, majoring in Biotechnology with a triple minor in Chemistry, Biology, and Gender Studies, while pursuing her passion for music through DJing. Jah aspires to finish every night she DJs with a satisfied and excited audience. Her goal while lighting up the stage with her mixes of the latest hits is to see the dance floor covered with arms raised and hips shaking to the beat.

When and how did you get started DJing?

Well it all basically started off when I went to my friend Nick Chandler’s warehouse show where I really got the idea that I wanted to DJ. Music isn’t something new to me though; I play 7 instruments and started off when I was 13. I started messing around with a small Hercules pad that Nick let me borrow and every opportunity I got, whether it was house parties or just in my room by myself I started practicing.

Where do your shows typically take place? What is the atmosphere like at the show?

As of right now my shows typically take place at Luxor Hookah Lounge off of Bonita Beach Road. I’ve done one show at Stache Bar in Miami and a couple of house parties in Miami as well. But in the Fort Myers area, it’s just Luxor. Usually the night starts off with playing some top 40 music. It is a chill atmosphere and we also have an amazing belly dancer who performs. By 12am I start to pick up the speed and start mixing in some top 40 with my electronic house set. My goal every night is to have the entire floor covered by people dancing and having a good night.

What types of events do you host in the 239 community?

Currently the events that I host in the 239 community are “Freaky Fridays” at Luxor Hookah Lounge, but I would love to host other events on other nights too. I was elected event coordinator for FGCU GSA which is an amazing opportunity because not only can I interact with an amazing group of people but at the same time they all support my DJing and come out whenever possible.

What has been your favorite memory DJing so far in your career?

Wow, that is a hard question for the mere fact that every night has some type of impact in my life. I think my most memorable night was about two weeks ago when almost all my GSA co-officers came out and supported not only me, but my music as well. I started the night out as usual and then everyone started showing up. My co-officers showing up got me super pumped. I mixed up my line up and gave them a dose of something they have never heard before. Throughout the entire night I had people tell me how amazing the set was and asked if I had any business cards!

Do you have any future goals that you have yet to achieve?

Well currently I am a Biotechnology major with a triple minor in Chemistry, Biology and Gender Studies. When I graduate I want to attend Medical School at MSU. My goal is to become a Medical Examiner but my passion has always been music. So in a way, I get the best of both worlds.

For a taste of one of Jah’s tracks click here! And be sure to check out the Luxor Hookah Lounge on Friday nights!

As a non local to the 239 area, I am always hesitant when it comes to choosing a salon. The style gods have answered, and with the help of 239 Editor Billy Table, I found a friendly, affordable salon on Reflections Parkway. The Red Salon has a clean, professional atmosphere equipped with a mix of fun tunes playing overhead while you enjoy a shampoo, dye, or hair cut. My first experience at the Red Salon was relaxing and pleasing thanks to the impressive styling skills of Nicholas Armas.

25-year-old Nick Armas views hair styling as a form of art because he says it is a way to express yourself. After my cut I sat down with Nick to explore deeper inside the beauty industry.

Who has inspired you the most throughout your career in beauty?

David Bowie. He’s the man!

What trends do you like lately?

I’m really into texturized, short hair styles. I also like pompadours AKA “the James Dean” style.

Where did you go to beauty school?

Bonita Springs School of Cosmetology.

What is it that drew you to the beauty industry?

I like that you can travel, it is very mobile. I love that there is endless opportunities, and I would like to travel and teach new trends.

Do you have any goals set for yourself that you have yet to reach?

Yes, they are endless. I would like to get out of Fort Myers, move to a big city and get better known. I would also love to start my own product line sometime in the future.

If you are in need of a cute cut in the 239 area, head to the Red Salon at 13550 Reflections Pkwy in Fort Myers and request Nick! Also visit the Red Salon & Spa website for further information about booking your appointment and special deals. Lastly, don’t forget to like Red Salon & Spa on Facebook!

When TwoThreeNine catches sight of a local business rocking the art scene it becomes our responsibility to transfer the message to you! Local Art Gallery & Boutique Savvy On First offers the Fort Myers community more than just buying and selling. The boutiques group over 200 artisans to display the most unique clothing, artwork, jewelry, handbags, and many other little odds and ends. Savvy On First was started to not only provide shoppers with homemade duds but also to provide local artists with a venue to get recognized. The art galleries and boutiques encourage “buying local,” while promoting downtown shops and other local patronage. The two boutiques go far beyond art gallery walls and offer consignment opportunities, and even offer classes.

Lisa Boucher, Savvy On First Owner

Woman to woman, shopper to shopper, I sat down with the owner of Savvy On First, Lisa Boucher. Here’s what’s going on!

What makes Savvy on First Street different from other boutiques?

Our personal relationship with the artists, almost 400 of them, makes Savvy the most unique place to shop. Almost everything is one-of-a-kind, with new items created constantly in response to the interests of our customers. We are always seeking out new artists and encouraging our existing artists to create fresh and innovative works. Most boutiques deal solely in mass produced items but we are more gallery than boutique because, like our wall art and sculptures, many the accessories and clothing are handmade by local artisans from infant sizes up to plus size. That guarantees that the item you fall in love with and purchase will be a truly unique combination of the artist’s talent and your sense of style.

What do your days consist of at Savvy on First?

A large part of the day is spent networking with new and existing customers and artists. On any given day, I might spend 3 or 4 hours meeting with artists to review their creations and to help them decide which items will be a good fit for the gallery and boutique. When the store is closed the networking continues online with local, national and international artists on social media networks like Facebook and online arts and crafts communities.

Are you involved in the Fort Myers arts community?

Heavily! We have almost 400 artists with items in our stores and most of them are local. We love finding new artists and giving them a venue where they can become known. We love supporting artists that are already successful but whose work may not be the right fit for other galleries.

Are you partaking in any upcoming art events or shows?

We are open during all downtown events including art walk and music walk and we also promote featured artists through the year. We are planning several art classes, contests and events for children during the summer months.

Why is it important to get connected to your community?

Because the producers (artists and craftspeople) and the buyers are outside of the mainstream economy. We can’t rely on general trends like some chain store. We have to know our artists and customers. Also, our most successful marketing is word-of-mouth, which is necessarily a community phenomenon. We also offer art classes to promote new skills for our current and new artists.

Give us one word or one sentence to describe your style.

We embrace the whimsical within everyone and make sure you leave smiling!

Savvy’s two locations are open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 to 5 –
